Ohana Pacific Health’s First-Ever Administrative-In-Training Program: Growing Leadership in Healthcare

Updated: 2 days ago

A Nursing Home Administrator has a tremendous role ensuring that a facility runs smoothly and follows all required regulations set by federal and state agencies. One way towards a career as a Nursing Home Administrator requires education and on-the-job training.

Ohana Pacific Health (OPH) launched its Administrator-in-Training (AIT) Program this month and is available to qualifying OPH staff at each facility on Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Maui, and Hawaiʻi Island. The program allows OPH to tap into its available talent to help fulfill its mission, allowing OPH to play a strong role in training the next generation of leaders—a critical component in building skills and qualities needed for effective leadership.

OPH is thrilled to announce its first two AITs, Kayla Phillips from Hale Makua Kahului on Maui and Kamalanimalie Manner from The Villas on Oʻahu!

Kayla Phillips who was a Heath Information Management Coding Assistant at Hale Makua in Kahului, Maui until her recent promotion to AIT. Kayla’s goal was always to become an Administrator. She met Hale Makua Kahului's Administrator, Teana Kahoʻohanohano, a few years ago for a college assignment she had where she needed to interview someone working in the career that she was pursuing. She began working for Hale Makua as a Unit Helper and then later as a Health Information Management Assistant. She has since earned her Bachelor's degree and will soon receive her Master’s degree in Business Administration with a focus on Healthcare Management. The AIT Program was introduced to her and was a perfect fit. Kayla will spend the next year training on all aspects at Hale Makua, shadowing managers and being mentored by Teana.

“I’m looking forward to helping in what capacity that I can, while still bringing joy and fulfillment to not only the residents but myself as well,” says Kayla.

“We are so excited to have Kayla in our canoe here at Hale Makua Kahului!” says Teana. “Kayla started years ago working her summers as a clerk.  It was easy to see early on her drive and passion for serving our Kūpuna.  Selecting her as our first AIT was a very easy decision. We look forward to watching her grow and being a part of her journey!"
